Strong people lose marks on paper

You might be the best person for the job and still miss out on an interview, because the panel can only score what's written down. These are the usual places a response loses marks.

  • Too much backgroundHalf the words go on setting the scene, and the panel never hears what you did.
  • The same example every timeOne great project stretched across every criterion shows a narrow range of experience.
  • Pitched at the wrong levelExamples that sit below the level of the role, so the panel can't score you at that level.
  • Over the limitSome application forms cut off anything past the word or character limit.
  • Generic AI answersPolished sentences with no real detail, or worse, results you never had.
  • Half an answerCriteria that ask two things at once, where only one part gets addressed.

How it works

  1. Paste in the prompt

Add the criteria exactly as written, the word limit, the position description and your CV.

  2. Plan your examples

It asks about your best work, then maps a different lead example to each criterion. You agree the plan before it writes.

  3. Draft, score, paste

Each response is drafted, scored out of 5 and improved, then pasted into the Word template with its word count.

What a strong response looks like

Every response follows the same shape, so the panel can find what they're scoring. Here's a fictional example.

Proven experience leading a team to deliver community programs within budget and to quality standards.

I have six years' experience leading community program teams. As Team Leader, Youth Outreach at Southside Health, I manage a team of eight and a $1.2 million program budget across three sites.

Answers it upfront, with scope

When I started, two of our three sites were behind on funded targets and staff turnover was high. I met with each team member, mapped where their time was going, and found duplicated paperwork was costing almost a day a week. I worked with our quality lead to merge three intake forms into one, and set up a 15-minute weekly check-in at each site.

What I personally did

Within nine months, all three sites met their funded targets for the first time in two years, and every team member stayed on through the next funding round. The program then passed its 2025 quality audit with no corrective actions.

What changed, with numbers

I would bring the same approach to this role: listen first, remove what gets in the way, and keep the team focused on the young people we serve.

Why it works

It pitches you at the right level

It checks the classification of the role and the capability framework behind it, then shapes your examples to match.

It plans before it writes

Your examples get spread across the criteria, so the panel sees the full range of what you've done.

It scores like a panel

Every draft is rated out of 5, with the one thing holding it back. Anything under 4 gets reworked.

It's honest about gaps

It won't invent results, titles or numbers. Where your evidence is thin, it shows you the most honest way to answer.

Hi, I'm Sam

I've written selection criteria responses for government, health, university and community sector roles, and I've hired and coached teams of my own. The hardest part was never the writing. It was choosing the right example, pitching it at the right level and fitting it into the limit.

This prompt is built around that. It does the planning with you, keeps every claim true and checks each answer before you send it. Every role and panel is different, so I can't promise a result. What I can give you is a clear process that gets your best evidence in front of the panel.

Questions

Which roles is it for?

Any role that asks you to address selection criteria. That's common in Australian government, health, education, university and community sector jobs, at any level from entry roles to executive.

Is this the STAR method?

It's built on the same idea of situation, action and result. It also opens with a direct answer to the criterion and closes by linking your example to the role, so a panel can score it quickly.

What if they want a one-page statement or a pitch?

The prompt asks how your application needs to be set out. For a one or two page statement or pitch, it picks the two or three examples that cover the most criteria and shares the space between them.

Does it handle character limits on online forms?

Yes. It counts characters, including spaces if the form does, and keeps each response under the limit.

Do I need the Bloom Kit as well?

No. The Selection Criteria Prompt works on its own. If you're also updating your CV and cover letter, the Bloom Kit covers those.

Which AI do I need?

Any AI chat tool works, including the free versions of Claude, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. To upload your CV or position description as a file, use one that accepts attachments. Otherwise you can paste the text in.

Is my information safe?

Your documents go into the AI tool you choose, under that tool's own privacy settings. We never see them. Avoid pasting in your tax file number, bank details or anyone else's private information.

How do I get my files?

You'll get a download link straight after checkout and by email. Links expire after 24 hours, and a fresh one is sent automatically if you click an expired link.

What if something's wrong with my files?

Email info@samanthabowen.com.au. If a file is faulty or doesn't do what we've described, I'll fix it, replace it or refund you.
